Hand holding the corner of a spalted walnut case showing a freshly cut, dry-fit through-dovetail.

first hand cut dovetail

First hand-cut dovetail. Spalted walnut, which I should not have started with, but the wood was sitting on the rack and asking for a project. Spalt lines are essentially soft fungal veins running through harder wood, which means a saw will wander if you're not paying attention and a chisel will find the line and tear out on the way back. I cut everything a hair fat and pared down slowly. The fit is not bragging-grade. But it stays together when you tap it home, and that has to be the start of every joint a person ever cuts.
